Dear Resident,
Welcome to spooky season! To all who celebrate, wishing a happy Diwali and a joyous Thanksgiving. Also, a blessed Yom Kippur to those who observe. Mid-fall brings with it cooler days and earlier nights. I hope you are all staying warm and cozy during this post-equinox lull.
A few weeks ago, I had the honour of presenting local gardener extraordinaire, Rudy Riske, with an Outstanding Achievement Award on his 100th birthday. For those of you unfamiliar, Rudy began cultivating a garden along the Huron-Wendat Trail by the Black Creek in his eighties and has dutifully maintained it since. He built, planted and maintained the garden by hand, and has involved the TRCA and youth in cleanup efforts for the river. Now, with the help of a team of dedicated volunteers, the tiered garden is thriving and provided the perfect backdrop for the autumn celebration. Thank you to all who participated in the event and the prior cleanup, including Regenesis @ York and most especially local neighbour Peter Wolfl who leads the project year after year.
Also, I had a great conversation with a group of youth decorating Orange Shirts at the Woodview Park library in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which falls on September 30th. It is heartening to see young folks both reflect on the sordid history of the residential schooling system, as well as reaffirm the rights of all Indigenous Peoples on Turtle Island.
Lastly, for all seniors and folks with disabilities who have not yet applied, the deadline for this year’s Property Tax and Utility Rebate application is October 31st. If you have questions about eligibility or need help with an application, please contact my office.
