The Safe Futures Initiative is a bold and transformative program developed to close the critical water safety gap affecting vulnerable populations across Canada. In a country where water is both a beloved recreational resource and a serious safety hazard, many children—particularly those from low-income, Indigenous, and immigrant communities—do not possess the basic survival swimming skills required to stay safe in aquatic environments.
This initiative sets out to change that reality by delivering high-quality, accessible water safety education to children regardless of their socioeconomic or cultural background. The goal is to ensure that all children are equipped with essential, life-saving skills that can mean the difference between life and death in an unexpected water emergency.
With an annual funding target of $1 million, the Safe Futures Initiative is seeking support from forward-thinking sponsors and community leaders who are committed to equitable safety education. A two-year pilot program will serve as the foundation for broader, long-term impact. Hosted by Shendy’s Swim School in collaboration with local schools and community partners, the pilot will go beyond just instruction. It will remove key participation barriers by providing transportation, culturally appropriate swimwear, and nutritious snacks, creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all participants.
Drowning remains a public health crisis in Canada, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities. With the help of sponsors, this initiative aims to reach thousands of children across Ontario and empower them with the confidence and ability to enjoy water safely and potentially save lives.
In addition to its life-saving mission, the initiative also offers sponsors high-visibility recognition opportunities through media coverage, social media features, branded event materials, and exclusive participation in community engagement events. Supporters will be prominently acknowledged as champions of safety and equity.
Organizations and individuals interested in partnering with the Safe Futures Initiative can contact the team at sponsorships@safefutures.ca for more information about how to get involved and contribute to a safer, more inclusive future for all children.
