Dear Neighbours,
We share the grave concern of many Duke Heights exporters of draconian and unjustified tariffs placed on many Canadian exports to the United States.
The City of Toronto is taking additional steps to support and safeguard local firms and manufacturers and boost Canada's economic resilience in response to US tariffs. The City's plan seeks to enhance local supply networks, promote locally produced items, and assist the businesses and workers most vulnerable to economic instability. It expands on the City's long-term economic development strategy, Sidewalks to Skylines: An Action Plan for Toronto's Economy (2025-2035), and incorporates proposals from a group of Toronto business and labour leaders.
One of the more notable actions that the City of Toronto is undertaking is the launch of a campaign called “Love Local”, which encourages Torontonians to shop local and support Canadian-made products and businesses. Large promotional signs with LED lights are being installed at significant landmarks across the City to spread awareness, including a soon-to-be-determined location in York Centre. Local business owners are encouraged to display decals and promote this initiative on social media platforms. I am optimistic that “Love Local” will benefit businesses in the DUKE Heights BIA and strengthen our local economy in response to the ongoing U.S. tariff measures.
A road resurfacing project on Alness Street from Finch Avenue West to Steeles Avenue West which began in 2024, will proceed into its second phase this month. Phase 1, which was completed in 2024, included a new sidewalk on the west side of Alness Street, truck aprons at intersections, sidewalk and curb repairs, and new cycle tracks. Phase 2, which is scheduled for completion by end of Summer 2025, will involve road resurfacing, updated pavement markings, curb radius reductions at Finch Avenue West and Alness Street, and electrical work at multiple intersections.

Toronto Hydro is improving infrastructure in DUKE Heights. The boundaries for the project include a section of Dolomite Drive. Work is expected to begin this month.
