Yusuf Omar has an unusual goal for a coach: he doesn't want to keep you around.
"Get in there, fix things, get out," says the founder of The System, a bespoke athletic conditioning and recovery facility tucked inside DUKE Heights at 5 Kodiak Crescent. "I try not to keep you as a client. If I address the issues and teach you how to handle them, you don't need me."
In a world built on recurring memberships and open-ended treatment plans, that philosophy stands out. It's also, apparently, exactly what keeps people coming back — until they don't have to.
What Is The System?
The System is not a conventional gym. It's a boutique athletic performance and recovery operation serving professional athletes, chronically injured individuals, concussion patients, and anyone whose body isn't doing what it should. Think athlete recovery, bespoke training, and injury resolution all under one roof — and then some.
"We resolve problems very quickly," Omar says. "The secret is getting people proactive in the process."
That process begins with a deep consultation — a genuinely thorough one. Omar describes his approach as peeling back a "Russian nesting doll of trauma," working inward through layers of compensation and dysfunction to find what he calls the distortion at the core. Most practitioners treat the outermost doll. Omar wants to reach the smallest one.
"I lift up the parking brake," he says. It's a characteristically blunt way of putting it: once you stop fighting what your own body is doing against you, everything else gets faster, easier, and more efficient.
Founded on Asking Why
Omar founded The System in 1987, driven by a question that most practitioners weren't asking: why? Not what the injury is, not which protocol to apply — but why the problem exists in the first place, and what the body is actually telling you.
"I was never interested in following trends," he says. "Only in what works."
That orientation toward first principles over fashion has defined nearly four decades of practice. Over that time, what once took twelve sessions now takes three. Not because the system was rushed or simplified, but because Omar's experience has become vastly more refined — he simply sees more, and more quickly, than he did before.
The work spans speed and strength conditioning, sports injury management, concussion treatment, chronic pain resolution, nutrition, and Olympic lifting. The clientele has ranged from Bahamian national sprinters and OHL hockey players to NCAA Division 1 athletes, a member of the Cuban National Baseball Team, and a principal percussionist with the Blue Man Group.

The Proof Is in the Results
The story Omar tells most readily involves a gentleman from the Bahamas — a sprinter who had sustained two prior concussions before developing hamstring injuries. He came to The System hamstrung, literally and figuratively. Within four days, without any formal structured training program, just drilling and retraining movement patterns, he was beating his personal best times on the beach.
"Time drastically improved — all without formal contextualized training," Omar says. "We just got the body doing what it was supposed to do."
It's a story that captures The System's approach in miniature: find the blockage, remove it, and let the athlete's own capacity do the work. The body, Omar believes, is rarely the problem. The distortions piled on top of it are.

Becoming Your Own Coach
What separates The System from most recovery and performance services is its end goal: client independence. Omar calls it "becoming your own coach." The in-depth consultation, the layered assessment, the drills and education built into every session — they're all aimed at equipping clients to understand and manage their own bodies long after their time with Omar is done.
"Clients getting better, seeing improvement — that's the goal," he says. "I do not want you returning."
It's a strange thing to say about a business. It's also, clearly, a point of pride.
