As winter gives way to spring, I’m focused on brighter days and doubling down on the priorities that matter most to residents and businesses in the DUKE Heights BIA.
We share the concern of many business owners in DUKE Heights who may have received a reassessment notice from the province. The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) assesses and classifies all properties in Ontario under the Assessment Act and regulations set by the Government of Ontario. Please visit mpac.ca or call 1-866-296-6722 for more details. In most cases appeals can be filed up to March 31, 2026.
The long-awaited Finch West Good Movement Study was adopted by the City of Toronto Infrastructure and Environment Committee on Feb. 25. This initiative dates to the spring of 2016 when DUKE Heights, Emery Village BIA and residents felt a goods movement strategy was vital considering the approval of the construction of the Finch West LRT. The report identifies action items for the future and supports further study of using the York University Busway for heavy vehicles, an urgent ask for the DUKE Heights community. February’s snowfall reminded us winter isn’t over just yet. We’re continuing to track snow clearing concerns as we transition seasons. Reliable service delivery remains a priority. I encourage business owners to report recurring issues early through our office so they can be addressed. My office escalates these inquiries for immediate action by snow operations.
As we prepare for the busy summer season, Rogers Stadium—with a full lineup of concerts and events—has been a key focus in recent weeks, particularly with respect to the impacts on DUKE Heights business owners, employees and customers. I am working closely with City staff, Northcrest as the landowner, Live Nation as the promoter, and MP Roman Baber to strengthen traffic management and mitigate sound levels.
I also want to remind business owners and residents about ongoing Sheppard Ave. W Bridge construction between Keele St. & Dufferin St. Metrolinx began shoring work along the Barrie GO corridor on March 2 and will continue until May 29. Work typically occurs weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with occasional overnight work from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
As always, my team and I remain available to assist with City services, concerns, and any local matters that require attention.
Wishing you a successful start to spring.
Sincerely,
James Pasternak
Toronto City Councillor
