Councillor’s Corner- Ward 6 : Supporting Resilient Business Owners Through COVID-19

April 29, 2020

james-pasternak

Dear Neighbours,

As we live through unprecedented times, I am writing to assure you that we will emerge from this pandemic stronger than ever. As your local councillor I know the Duke Heights BIA is a resilient group of business owners that can overcome the challenges brought forth by COVID-19. However, you are not alone in this fight. Myself, the Mayor, the City of Toronto and the other levels of government are here to ensure that businesses must be given the opportunity to flourish.

As some of you may be aware, the City of Toronto launched the Economic Support and Recovery Taskforce to assist with the economic impact from COVID-19. We have provided extended grace periods on property tax and utility bills. Under this plan, the City has also expanded the Digital Main Street program. This program offers comprehensive resources for businesses to take advantage of to achieve a digital transformation and establish an online presence. In addition, we have made a commitment to keep the economy moving as retail businesses are exempted from the City’s Noise Bylaw in order to provide after hour deliveries. We will not stop looking for ideas and policies that can help business recover and grow.

We have also partnered with the Toronto Region Board of Trade, to deliver a one-stop centre where you can find resources, tools, and support programs to help navigate you through the challenges you are facing. This resource can be accessed at https://supportbusiness.bot.com/. You can also register for distantly.ca, a platform that facilitates donations for your businesses to help you through this difficult time. I know North York is made up of selfless people who are willing to help and see their local business and family owned shops thrive.

Moving forward, I will continue to listen to the needs of our business owners to make sure that your needs are being met. I will do this in collaboration with my partners on the federal and provincial level. I urge all of you to continue to remain strong and resilient. Together we will conquer the challenges brought forth by COVID-19. My staff and I continue to work tirelessly to support you. Please do not hesitate to contact me at 416-392-1371 or email me at: Councillor_Pasternak@toronto.ca.
