Dear Resident,
I would like to wish you all a happy and safe New Year, and a blessed, prosperous 2025. Also, a happy Chanukkah and Lunar New Year to all celebrating. Now that the New Year is upon us, it is time for City Council to begin presentations on the year’s budget. Once again, a property tax increase is being proposed, this time of 6.9%.
I have long argued that not only are property taxes an unsustainable way to solve Toronto’s financial problems, but they penalize vulnerable groups such as seniors. During times of record inflation, this increase will come nowhere close to filling the gap and it will burden Torontonians who are already struggling to get by.
Our City is the crown jewel of the Province, but the provincial funding formula leaves us unable to afford the repairs, projects and services we need. The provincial government collects their portion of property taxes and distributes them across the province. If that money stayed in Toronto, it would be over $2 billion a year contributed back into the city, building roads, maintaining green spaces, supporting families and preparing for growth here at home.
I will be voting against this property tax increase. I also urge residents to visit the City’s website to find out how they can get involved, as this process will continue across the coming weeks and there will be more opportunity for input. If you want to know how you can watch the proceedings and/or participate, please contact my office.
For those who have applied to the City's Property Tax and Utility Rebate, some of you will have already received a notice in the mail indicating whether you will be receiving a rebate this year, and if you will be issued a cheque or a credit to your account. For those who have not, my office has been told by city staff that these notices may come until the end of January. If you have not received anything by then, please call my office.
