CPO Deanne Taylor is a crime prevention officer at 31 Division located at 40 Norfinch Drive. Deanne has worked in 31 Division for over 6 years. Deanne started her role as a Crime Prevention Officer in April 2025. What does a crime prevention officer do? They implement strategies to reduce crime in the community by educating the public, analyzing crime data to identify risks, and collaborate with residents and businesses to improve safety. Their duties include conducting presentations on personal safety, how to make your home or business safer through crime prevention through environmental design (safety audits) and working with community partners like City of Toronto.
Deanne wants to make you aware of Distraction thefts that are occurring in 31 Division. A distraction theft is a type of theft where the victim’s attention is diverted to steal something, usually valuables like a wallet, purse, phone, or jewelry.
How does it happen?
The thief (often in a group) creates a distraction. Here are some common examples:
- Asking for directions
- Spilling something on the victim
- Asking the victim to pray with them
How can you prevent distraction theft?
- Always maintain your personal space.
- Do not let others get close enough to hug you or shake your hand.
Tips to protect yourself:
- Stay aware of your surroundings.
- Keep your belongings close and zipped up.
- Be cautious when approached by strangers with odd or overly engaging behaviour.
- Report any suspicious or criminal incidents immediately to police.
