For over three decades, Shendy’s Swim and CPR Training Centre has been a trusted name in aquatic education, lifeguard training, and first aid certification in Toronto, Ontario. Owned and operated by Eric Shendelman—known fondly as “Shendy”—the centre has become more than just a swim school. It’s a community-focused organization driven by safety, prevention, and a deep passion for helping others thrive in and around the water.
Shendy’s Swim and CPR Training Centre is designed for support, comfort, safety, and optimal learning. At the heart of the centre is a sparkling saltwater pool—gentler on the skin and eyes than traditional chlorine pools—providing a clean and inviting environment for swimmers of all levels. The facility is further distinguished by its team of professional and energetic full-time and part-time staff, most of whom learned to swim and completed their own training at Shendy’s. Their experience, expertise, and passion shine through in every class, whether they’re guiding young beginners or coaching lifeguard candidates through rigorous certification programs.
Eric Shendelman’s journey into aquatics began long before the doors of Shendy’s opened in 1992. With a professional background that includes leadership roles as Camp Director at Crestwood Valley Day Camp and Camp Arrowhead, Eric’s lifelong mission has been to instill lifesaving skills and a culture of safety in youth and adults alike. He has also served as Past President and former Standards Chair of the Ontario Camps Association, further cementing his dedication to high-quality training and standards in recreational programming.
As a certified Lifesaving Society Instructor/Trainer and First Aid Trainer, Shendy has trained thousands of lifeguards, swim instructors, and first responders. But what truly sets him apart is his unique approach to education. “I’ve always believed that the best learning happens when it’s built on trust, respect, and a shared goal to protect each other,” says Shendy. “We’re not just training lifeguards—we’re creating leaders who know how to react with clarity and compassion in critical moments.”
Of course, the magic at Shendy’s doesn’t happen alone. “I couldn’t do any of this without my incredible team,” Shendy says. “They bring energy, heart, and a deep commitment to helping every student feel confident and capable in the water.”
That commitment has created something truly special—full-circle moments that speak to the lasting impact of the program. Parents who once participated in Shendy’s parent-and-tot classes over 30 years ago are now bringing their own children to swim. Generations of families have trusted the Shendy’s team to guide their aquatic journeys.
Beyond running the training centres, Eric is also the founder of the NO PUSH MOVEMENT, a global initiative dedicated to injury and drowning prevention. Through this campaign, he empowers swim and lifeguard candidates to become ambassadors of water safety, delivering impactful messages to their communities and beyond. His work has reached thousands and continues to make waves.
Whether you’re a first-time swimmer, a seasoned lifeguard, or a camp looking to build your aquatic program, Shendy’s Swim and CPR Training Centre offers expert instruction with heart. As Shendy puts it, “It’s not just about passing a test—it’s about being ready when it counts.”
